Char Siu is a popular way to season and prepare barbecue pork in Cantonese cuisine. It is one of our favorite dishes to make and can be served with rice, noodles, add to broth, use as a filling for steamed or baked dumplings (bao).

minutesIngredients
3 lbs pork butt roast cut into 2 inch strips
2 packages Chinese Barbecue (char siu) seasoning mix NOH brand
1 cup water
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup honey
1/2 cup hoisin sauce
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
Directions
- Marinate pork according to package instructions, reserving 2 teaspoons for later.
- Set oven for 350 degrees. Remove pork from marinade and place on wire rack on sheet pan. Cook pork for 30 minutes turning halfway.
- While the pork is cooking make the glaze. In a small saucepan mix the remaining ingredients including the reserved seasoning mix. Cook on medium for approximately 10-15 minutes until glaze forms and set aside to cool.
- Take the pork out of the oven and set your oven to broil with the top rack about 6” from the element. Brush the glaze on the pork and return to oven until the pork gets caramelized. This will only take a couple minutes.
- Flip the Char Siu and brush on the other side and return to oven. I like to do this one more time on each side for extra goodness.
- Serve with Jasmine rice or noodles
